He moved to New York in the 1930s and opened his ‘Contrology’ studio with his wife Clara. Pilates worked with dancers, actors and the average man off the street. He died in 1967 and left behind an incredible legacy. A legacy which is being introduced in Malawi!

Joseph Pilates outlined Six Principles in his book “Return to Life Through Contrology.” These are: Concentration, Conrol, Centering, Flowing movement, Precision and Breathing. These principles are intertwined and one does not work without the others. We incorporate these principles throughout a Pilates session in order to maximize the benefits for our bodies.

The concept of Pilates is based on ideal alignment. In other words, our bones should stack in such a way that our muscles, joints and ligaments have minimal strain. When our bodies are out of alignment, we can experience tightness or pain (most of us have had a sore lower back or neck). We can have an overuse injury from any repetitive movement that we do (typing, sports, driving, etc.). A mis-alignment could also be a result of scoliosis or some physical trauma like a broken arm or leg. Many of us simply have poor posture and we need to strengthen and stretch certain muscles to get our bodies working more efficiently.

In the past, Pilates has been associated with dancers and athletes, but it’s important to know that this discipline is accessible to all ages and fitness levels. Perhaps you are an elite athlete who wants to improve performance? Or a dancer who wants to prolong your career and minimize injury? Pilates is a safe form of exercise for pregnant women and after delivery too. Do you have an injury or a back problem that needs strengthening? Maybe you are a mature person and this is your first foray into the world of exercise? Even kids are getting into the Pilates act now with classes being offered as an extramural activity.

Most commonly with our clients, Pilates offers a one hour break where you get to relax, de-stress and focus just on yourself!

Most Pilates classes are done on a mat on the floor. Joseph Pilates’ original 34 repertoire from his book were all mat exercises. And it’s challenging! We recommend that you start with the basics until you are feeling strong, supple and stable. To spice up mat classes, small apparatus are often used such as balls, elastic bands and circles. Larger Pilates studios also have specialised equipment called the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Barrel and the Chair. While these may sound intimidating, they are designed to work the body very specifically and can be adjusted for any client’s specific needs. A well-trained and certified instructor will understand how to work with each client, including when to refer to a medical professional. If you are injured or pregnant, it is imperative to consult with your physician or specialist before starting classes.

The opportunity has arrived that you can discover the wonderful world of Pilates here in Malawi. Group Pilates mat classes are offered in Blantyre  and Cape Maclear which will give you an introduction to Pilates and get you into a regular training routine.  Three day Pilates Retreats are available, offered on Mumbo Island which include morning and evening Pilates mat classes, stretch classes and Gyrokinesis classes, snorkeling, kayaking, nature walks and pure relaxation.
